◦ The Mecklenburg County system
Most of Charlotte's dog parks are run by one entity. That's good news.
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation operates the majority of Charlotte's public off-leash parks. The rules are consistent: free admission, 7:30am to sunset, current rabies + DHLPP + Bordetella required, no children under 12, double-gated entry, separate small- and large-dog sections.
This standardization is actually a feature. Davie, Barkingham (Reedy Creek), Shuffletown, McAlpine, Weddington Road, Clarks Creek, and Swaney Pointe are all run the same way. If you've been to one, the rules and layout are familiar at the rest.
The exceptions worth knowing: Renaissance runs 24-hour access (uncommon). Frazier Park is run by the City of Charlotte rather than the county and has slightly different hours. Canine Commons is operated by the Town of Pineville.
◦ Free vs membership
Is Skiptown worth the membership?
Skiptown in South End is the original — Charlotte invented this category before it spread to Atlanta. 24,000 square feet of indoor turf and outdoor space, full restaurant and bar, daycare, grooming. Members-only with day passes available.
It's worth it for two cases: dogs that get overwhelmed at busy public parks and need a screened-in vaccinated-only space, or owners who want to sit somewhere with food and drink while their dog plays. For dollar-per-running-time it doesn't beat Davie.
Mary Warner Mack in Concord is a different kind of paid option — private membership for a smaller, controlled environment without the bar component.
◦ Practical info
What to know before you go.
- Vaccinations. Mecklenburg County requires current rabies (with tag visible), DHLPP, and Bordetella. Tags on the collar — staff and other owners do check.
- Hours. County parks are 7:30am to sunset. Sunset closures are enforced — the gates lock physically. Renaissance is the only 24-hour public option.
- No kids under 12 in any Mecklenburg County dog park.
- Leash on the way in. Off-leash applies inside the fenced area only — leashed in parking lots and on paths between sections.
- Bags and water. County parks have bag dispensers but they run empty. BYO bags is the rule. Most have a water fountain in the fenced area, but bring extra in summer.
◦ Common questions
Frequently asked.
What is the biggest dog park in Charlotte?
Davie Dog Park at William R. Davie Park is the largest public option at five fenced acres, with separate small- and large-dog sections. The dog area inside McAlpine Creek Park is also large and sits inside an even bigger park with trails.
Are any Charlotte dog parks open 24 hours?
Yes — Renaissance Dog Park in southwest Charlotte is the only one with 24-hour access. Every other public park follows Mecklenburg County's 7:30am-to-sunset rule.

No. Charlotte and Mecklenburg County both require dogs to be leashed in public outside designated off-leash dog parks. Trails, greenways, and the rest of any park all require leash. Enforcement has stepped up across the county greenway system in recent years.
