◦ Crissy Field + Fort Funston
The two GGNRA experiences that make SF special.
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (federal park system, NPS) includes two unfenced off-leash sites that are genuinely among the best in the US: Crissy Field beach in the Marina, and Fort Funston in the southwest corner. Both have ocean access. Both allow off-leash play during posted hours. Both are recall-required.
Crissy Field has been the subject of decades of policy fights about off-leash rules. As of 2026 the off-leash zones are reduced but still substantial. Fort Funston is the bigger and quieter of the two, sitting on cliffs above the Pacific. Visiting either is a regional default for SF dog owners with recall-trained dogs.
◦ Practical info
What to know before you go.
- Vaccinations: SF requires current rabies plus a city dog license ($25 per year for spayed/neutered).
- Hours: SF Rec & Park DPAs are typically 6am to 10pm. GGNRA sites follow federal-park hours (often dawn to dusk).
- Leash law: California has no statewide leash law. SF requires leash outside DPAs.
- Weather: SF is mild year-round but foggy. Coastal parks (Crissy, Funston, Ocean Beach) can be cold and windy even in July.
- Coyote awareness: Coyotes have re-established in SF parks. Most are uninterested in dogs but small dogs especially should not be off-leash in coyote-active areas (Bernal Heights, Mt Davidson, Glen Canyon).
